Historically, The Rutherford Backpackers was originally constructed as a school in 1862.
The Rutherford gained its unique name through a very famous pupil who attended the school in 1882. His name was Sir Ernest Rutherford.
Sir Ernest Rutherford has come to be known as 'the father of nuclear physics’ and New Zealand's most famous scientist!
